As specialist practitioners, the School Nurse functions as both a health promoter and a health educator. The School Nurse works in partnership with many agencies, professionals and families to promote and protect the bio-psycho-social health and wellbeing of children and young people, in the developing years. Working to safeguard the needs of children and young people in Jersey, providing a fully confidential health service including: advice, guidance and support with physical and mental health; healthy lifestyle choices; childhood continence and toilet training; behaviour management and modification; and adolescent and sexual health; as well as providing specific support for families with complex needs within the school setting; and meeting the health needs of Children Looked After

hours: 37.5 pw

salary: Grade 5 - Ranging from £66,423 - £71,038 depending on experience

criteria: You will be a Registered Health Care Professional and a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SN) with at least two years' relevant specialist experience. Own transport is essential.

Role details

The successful applicant will deliver and develop this specialist service for school age children and young people providing advice and intervention within a multi-disciplinary framework.
This will involve developing and maintaining a high clinical profile and presence and acting as role model for other nursing staff.

You will be a highly experienced practitioner within the multi-disciplinary team and will contribute to the development of a clinical service through involvement in standard setting and the development and dissemination of expertise within clinical and education settings or at home.

Professional Responsibilities

This role comes under the management of the School Nurse Team Lead and the Operational Lead for Child and Family Service FNHC.
You will work as part of the School Nurse Team, delivering the universal, targeted, or specialist service to all school age children and young people, from the point of school entry until 19 years. You will promote the holistic health of the school aged population, thereby enabling them to achieve their full potential encouraging children and young people to think about their health and become responsible for their own wellbeing as they progress through childhood and adolescence.

The role is varied and includes a requirement to provide health representation in the Multi-agency Safeguarding Hub:

• Keeping children and young people safe from harm and protecting them from abuse, in accordance with Jersey Safeguarding Partnership Board Child Protection Procedures and Family Nursing & Home Care policies
• Offering health advice and universal health surveillance, incorporating early intervention and support to children, young people and their families. The School Nurse Team works in partnership with allied health professionals; colleagues in education, social care other community services; CYPES, HCS, other statutory and voluntary sectors, children, young people and families
• Reviewing the health status of children and young people and facilitating health care plans as required
• Promoting early intervention and help to support children, young people and families to reach their full potential

The post holder will promote a culture of evidence-based practice by contribution to developing and maintaining protocols, documentation, systems, standards, policies and guidelines in line with the Clinical Governance Framework and adhere to the standards set out by Jersey Care Commission.

You will demonstrate enhanced nursing practice and will act as a role model in terms of own care delivery by acquiring knowledge and skills to support a client based service supported by the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will support individual clients/carers through all aspects of treatment programmes, providing a ready means of access and advice.
You will make a significant contribution to a specialty service through developing effective clinical leadership skills, keeping fully up to date in developments within own professional discipline sharing clinical knowledge/experience in order to enhance nursing care. You will maintain a professional portfolio which demonstrates the continuing acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes, understanding and achievement.
