What is covered?

This course is aimed at Registered Nurses working in adult social care to with the aim to increase knowledge, confidence and competence in performing Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), Digital Removal of Faeces (DRF), Digital Rectal Stimulation (DRS)

 

Course Content

By the end of the session learners will be able to identify:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the bowel
  • Definitions and causes of bowel dysfunction
  • How to assess bowel dysfunction (including DRE)
  • The role of interventions to improve and maintain bowel function (including DRF and DRS)
  • Explanation the role of pharmacology and prescribing to manage bowel dysfunction
  • Explanation how to identify and treat bowel care emergencies and complications
  • Explanation of the roles of consent, confidentiality, chaperoning, privacy and dignity, communication, documentation in relation to managing bowel dysfunction
  • Explanation of the importance of risk assessment in relation to managing bowel dysfunction
  • Explanation of the role of infection prevention control and care of the environment when undertaking bowel assessment / management
  • Explanation of the role of health care assistants in relation to bowel management
  • Demonstrate Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), Digital Removal of Faeces (DRF), Digital Rectal Stimulation (DRS)
